Interesting Find - Wasp Spider, Argiope bruennichi!

At GES, we love spotting these more stunning and distinctive finds!

While on site conducting grassland surveys in Hampshire, this beautiful species was found – a Wasp Spider, Argiope bruennichi! Being a recent species to the UK, Wasp Spiders are mainly found in southern England but are spreading northwards.

This colourful spider was first recorded in England in the 1920s and is primarily found in grasslands, though it is also present in coastal areas, woodland, heathland, farmland and gardens.

As with many spiders males run the risk of being eaten during mating. They wait carefuly at the edge of the web for the ideal moment and dart in quicky to mate, while trying not to be eaten alive.

We wonder what team members will spot next
